AFP State Director Peggy Venable was one of the few taxpayer advocates invited to testify on Monday at the Texas House and Senate Joint Transportation Committee meeting to give feedback on how the state should solve its transportation needs.

The scent of tax dollars brought local government officials out in droves, asking for more money.  Rather than re-prioritize their budgets and put transportation needs toward the top of their lists, the mayors, city managers and municipal association members begged state elected officials to doll out more of our tax dollars and to give local governments more taxing authority.  .

Peggy had an answer for these requests:

  • Don’t raise the gas tax until you end the numerous diversions,
  • Stop using public dollars to lobby and advocate for more transportation funding,
  • Re-prioritize your current budgets and make transportation funding a priority, and
  • Do not give local governments additional taxing authority.

Also, be sure to check out the testimony of AFP Watchdog Adrian Heath, who heads up the AFP Montgomery County Citizen Watchdog chapter. He tells the state – in no uncertain terms – that they should not to consider spending more tax dollars until the local government debt and spending in Texas is under control. Click Here to read it!
